Advice from a Trail Horse
by Barry Harris

I am not your wonder horse
your steed beneath your loins
carrying you always skyward
beyond the pale
green neon cactus
spiked in the sand beside
your desert watering hole.
I am also the nag you parked
at the livery for later,
dusted off, dried out, lathered down,
ready for the trail again tomorrow.
I am the horse you ride today.
