Evergreen Faculty Vote to Form Union

Subject: Faculty Union Vote
This morning the staff of the Public Employment Relations Commission counted ballots in the vote on the faculty union. A majority of ballots were in favor of the proposed union by a margin of 113 votes to 91. We expect that the Commission will certify the election in the near future, making the United Faculty of Evergreen/United Faculty of Washington State the exclusive bargaining representative for the faculty.
Negotiating our first contract with the new union will be an important part of our work in the coming year. As we undertake this work, I know that we all share a common concern for the best interests of our students and the long-term health of Evergreen. As president, I believe that our shared love for this college will provide common ground to build a solid relationship.
